Jake Dixon leads the Moto2 standings after his second victory in a week - and the Dover racer admitted back-to-back wins were beyond his expectations.
Dixon, who took the chequered flag for new team Elf Marc VDS Racing in Argentina last time out, produced a dominant display in the wet to win the Red Bull Grand Prix of the Americas in Texas on Sunday, beating Italy’s BLU CRU Pramac Yamaha star Tony Arbolino by four seconds.
The class of the field in qualifying at the Circuit of the Americas, Dixon pipped Liqui Moly Dynavolt Intact GP’s Spanish rider Manuel Gonzalez to pole by 0.250sec and, apart from an early slide on lap one, after rain unexpectedly fell just before lights out, controlled the race for maximum points and a 13-point lead in the standings.
It is the first time Dixon has topped the championship.
“The build-up on the grid was crazy, everything felt out of control with the rain falling,” Dixon said.
“I didn’t know what was going on and felt so stressed. But I got a really good start and braked too late into Turn 1 and then nearly high-sided on lap one. So, I said to myself, ‘Calm down!’.
“It’s been a massive weekend and that’s a credit to the Elf Marc VDS Racing Team. They’ve been working with me and keeping me cool, calm and collected. I never thought I’d have two consecutive wins in Moto2 - one in the dry, one in the wet.
“It’s great to do it in completely different conditions. I thought it would take more time for us to be competitive this year and, to be honest, we are still learning and I can get more comfortable on the bike.
“There’s still more to come and we’re aiming to fight for the top five at every track we go to.”
Dixon’s team-mate, Filip Salac, gambled on dry tyres hoping conditions would quickly ease, but instead the rain got worse and he pitted at the end of lap six before retiring.
The season continues in Qatar on April 11-13.
