Dover’s Jake Dixon claimed his third win of the Moto2 season in an incident-packed meeting at Malaysia on Sunday.
The action was delayed by more than three hours after a serious collision on the formation lap before the start of the proceeding Moto3 race involving Switzerland’s Noah Dettwiler and Spain’s world champion Jose Antonio Rueda, with Dettwiler critical but stable as of Monday.
When the Moto2 race finally got under way it was red-flagged after two laps due to a crash on the final corner. Reduced to 11 laps, the race restarted with third-placed Elf Marc VDS Racing rider Dixon slotting into second following a tough scrap with Albert Arenas.
The Briton then chased down early leader Dani Holgado and passed him for the lead on lap three. From there, he was able to stretch his advantage out to two seconds and take his sixth podium finish and climb to fourth in the standings on 215 points. Dixon’s team-mate, Filip Salac, failed to finish.
Dixon said: “First and foremost I want to wish the boys in Moto3 a speedy recovery because that was a horrible crash to see. But that race is dedicated to my grandad.
“That was so, so good. I’m so happy. I’ve been waiting since the early part of the season to come back to winning ways.
“People might hate me for saying this, but I cleaned up in that one! Also, a big shout out to the MotoGP physios here because I’ve had quite bad nerve pain in my right arm and a tingling sensation. There are so many people behind this result today, including my wife, daughter and all the team.
“It’s been a massive team effort. It’s not easy to get results like this today, but I’m happy to be one of the best at doing it.”
The season returns to Europe for the remaining two rounds of the championship, starting in Portugal on 7-9 November.
