Dover Athletic midfielder Jack Parkinson reveals he is playing with stress fracture to try and aid Vanarama National League promotion push

Jack Parkinson has revealed he is playing through the pain barrier to help Dover secure a place in the Vanarama National League play-offs.

The former Maidstone man has been playing as a sweeper for Chris Kinnear's side as they bid to secure a top-five finish and last week signed a new deal which will keep him at Crabble next year - whichever level they are playing at.

The 26-year-old revealed he has been playing with a stress fracture of a metatarsal which he sustained in the 2-1 home defeat to Southport on March 1.

Parkinson revealed: "I had it x-rayed after that game and it showed a stress fracture - whatever that is.

"It's not too bad, it swells up and is quite sore after I have played or trained but I pad it up before a game and I don't notice it. I try and be careful with it in training.

"It's just a question of managing it through the remaining games this season and then giving it a rest."

Parkinson revealed there was 'an agreement in place' with the club for 2016/17 adding: "That changes automatically if we do get promoted. Honestly though, none of the boys have even mentioned that possibility.

"It's a cliché but we are taking it one game at a time. If that happens then great, we'll talk about it in May, but for now we don't want to take our eye off the ball."

Parkinson admitted to disappointment that Dover's six-game unbeaten run - which included Saturday's 5-0 demolition of Torquay - ended on a low note with Monday's 3-0 reverse at relegation-threatened Boreham Wood.

He said: "To go from scoring five and keeping a clean sheet to losing like that, it's not nice, and it shouldn't happen, but it does happen sometimes.

"We didn't prepare any differently. The pitch at Boreham Wood was fantastic, the sun was out, there were fans there. It's a nice place to play.

"It was just tough playing Saturday and Monday. We're not making excuses, but it does have an impact - just look at some of the other results on Monday."

He added: "We have to put it behind us as quickly as possible. We've had disappointment before against Stourbridge and Southport at home and we've shown we're really good at bouncing back.

"It will be forgotten by Saturday afternoon and Halifax (3pm). Hopefully we can get back to winning ways."
