Dover Athletic striker Stefan Payne rues missed chances in Vanarama Conference draw at Forest Green Rovers

Striker Stefan Payne finished the Vanarama Conference season with 15 goals but admitted he should have added to that tally in the 0-0 draw at Forest Green Rovers on Saturday.

The point saw the home side finish fifth to reach the play-offs for the first time in their history while Whites finished an impressive eighth.

Boss Chris Kinnear’s side were 11 points off the play-offs in their first season back in non-league’s top flight for 12 years.

Payne, who won Dover’s Golden Boot award with the England C representative scoring 20 goals in all competitions, said his side had enough chances to win all three points in Gloucestershire.

He said: “We were just not as clinical as we should have been, or have been earlier this season, in front of goal.

“You have games when everything goes in and those when nothing does – this was one of
them.

“My first shot on goal took a bounce as I went to hit it and came off my shin before ballooning over the bar. That about summed my day up.”
