Rare victory for troubled Whites

Dover Athletic 2 Farnborough 1

FACING a fresh financial crisis off the pitch, Dover Athletic breathed fresh life into their battle to avoid relegation from the Conference with this victory over Farnborough on Saturday.

The Crabble club, who need to find £15,000 within the next week to ward off a possible winding up order, snatched a vital three points through a last-minute goal by Jimmy Strouts.

With time running out, Matt Carruthers' quickly-taken free kick enabled Strouts to glance home the winner.

Earlier, it seemed as if it was going to be another one of those days for Dover after they went behind to an own goal after 38 minutes when Tony Browne lashed a Darran Annon into his own net.

But Whites refused to drop their heads and were rewarded with an equaliser after 74 minutes when Browne's cross found Leon Kelly, and he drove a shot through Farnborough 'keeper Pennock that rolled slowly into the net.

Whites manager Neville Southall said afterwards: "Whatever the results, I can only promise that the players will work as hard on the pitch as the fans are off it. I don't think we played as well as we have in our last games, but I thought we just about deserved it."
