Concord Rangers 0 Dover Athletic 1 match report

Inih Effiong fired Dover into the FA Cup first round on Saturday.

The striker curled home a brilliant 25-yard free-kick with just three minutes left to hand Dover boss Andy Hessenthaler his first win since returning to the Crabble hotseat.

Concord nearly levelled up the fourth qualifying round tie in the fourth minute of stoppage time when former Whites defender Tyrone Sterling saw his header come back off the bar.

Alex Wall and Jack Midson both had early headers for Concord as Dover slowly eased themselves into the game.

Home keeper made what proved to be his only first-half save on 14 minutes when Mitch Brundle's free-kick fell for Inih Effiong and his shot on the turn was diverted behind for a corner.

The resulting corner was well-worked by Whites with a training ground move creating space for Brundle on the edge of the box but his first-time shot was comfortably gathered.

Effiong then sent Nortei Nortey through but he took a right-foot shot early and sent his effort a yard wide of the far upright.

Dover had good claims for a penalty turned down just before the half-hour when Connor Essam appeared to be pulled back in the box by Michael Clark, referee Paul Howard opting not to award a spot-kick or book Essam for diving.

Brundle picked out Effiong, who dragged his left-foot shot wide of the upright before the hosts responded just before the break but a fine block by Kevin Lokko denied Tosan Popo.

The game dipped in quality during the second half, Lokko for Dover and Wall for Concord both having chances.

Brundle failed to take advantage of a promising counter attack 20 minutes from time but Effiong often found himself too isolated up front for Dover before coming up trumps just before the final whistle.
