FA Cup: Bury 5 Dover Athletic 0 - match report

By Alex Birch

There was to be no giant killing for Dover Athletic in the Emirates FA Cup as League 2 Bury swatted the visitors aside at the Energy Check Stadium at Gigg Lane.

The Whites swapped Bedsente Gomis for Bobby-Joe Taylor in their one change from the victory over Maidenhead, while naming only six of the allotted seven subs on a cold afternoon in Greater Manchester.

Despite the end result the visitors managed to put Bury under pressure early on, winning two corners in the first 90 seconds that had the home defence all over the place.

The Shakers quickly countered, however, with Tom Miller forcing Mitch Walker into a stand up save after Danny Mayor had produced an inviting cross from the left.

Mayor looked threatening whenever he picked the ball up in space and he started the move that ended with Bury taking the lead on 12 minutes.

The midfielder’s quick feet gave him time to find the onrushing Callum McFadzean, whose low cross missed everyone except Jay O’Shea.

Byron Moore squandered a good chance to make it two three minutes later as Dover’s good start evaporated, before Mayor scored a stunning solo effort on 18 minutes to put the hosts in complete control.

Picking the ball up on halfway, Bury’s number 10 ghosted past three players and curled home from the edge of the box.

Inih Effiong and Bedsente Gomis worked Joe Murphy as Dover tried to find a glimmer of hope, but The Shakers remained the dominant side and made it 3-0 on 36 minutes.

They worked the ball up the pitch far too easily, with Nicky Maynard supplying Moore with the easy task of finishing past Walker.

Despite having the game all-but won, Bury kept up the pressure in the second half, as another McFadzean cross caused panic in Dover’s defence, before the ball was eventually cleared.

A horrible mistake by Moussa Diarra saw Neil Danns fire over with the goal gapping as goal four came closer, before it finally arrived on 65 minutes via an awkward Moore overhead kick from a yard out.

The ease with which Danns was able to get to the by-line and ping the ball over for his teammate summed up Dover’s miserable afternoon, with Dominic Telford’s individual effort in stoppage time adding insult to injury.
