Dover Athletic defender Seth Nana Twumasi closing in on return from injury

Seth Nana Twumasi is hoping to make his comeback from a knee injury when Dover meet Wrexham.

Twumasi hasn’t played since the 4-1 defeat at Southend at the start of November and is itching to return as Whites chase that elusive first National League win.

He was initially targeting last weekend’s match at former club Yeovil - a game that finished 1-1 - and while that proved too soon, he has a better chance of featuring when Dover take on promotion-chasing Wrexham at Crabble on Saturday.

“Always you want to play and help the team because of the situation we’re in,” said the former Maidstone right-back.

“It’s frustrating not being able to do that but I’m hoping to be involved this week or next week.

“I’ve got a fitness test on Thursday, so we’ll know more then.

“I wanted to be back for Yeovil, to play against my old club, but I aggravated the knee a little bit, which put me back.

“Hopefully I can be involved on Saturday. It’s a massive game. They don’t come bigger than Wrexham.”

Twumasi signed from Maidenhead in the summer fully aware of Dover’s plight following a 12-point deduction.

They’re 22 points from safety but Andy Hessenthaler’s squad remain motivated.

“It’s something I’ve never experienced before but everyone in the changing room has adapted well to the situation,” said Twumasi.

“This is why we play football, for the challenge.

“Nothing’s ever easy, we knew that from the beginning but that’s what we signed up for as footballers.

“Everyone’s motivated to get some results.

“The longer you don’t get that win, it drains you a little bit, especially when we’ve played so well in certain games and conceded late.

“You’re wondering when the win is going to come and it deflates you a little bit but by Monday you're back in training and ready to go.

“Anyone can beat anyone in this league and we’re capable of getting a run going.

“I think with the situation we’re in teams think they can roll us over just like that but we’ve played some top teams who have said we’re the best side they’ve played - we just haven’t got the results.

"The fixtures don’t get any easier but this is what we signed up for, to test ourselves against these players.”

Despite Dover’s struggles, boss Hessenthaler has never had cause to question the work rate of his side.

They’ve kept going in adversity, believing a win is round the corner.

“We’ve given everything and Hessy is working so hard to bring players in,” said Twumasi.

“He’s given us a lot of instructions and as players we have to take responsibility when we’re on the pitch.

“Collectively, we’re working hard and the stats show that but individually we haven’t been good enough.

“We’re playing well and then a lack of concentration, one mistake and we’re punished.”

If Dover do beat Wrexham this weekend, the squad don’t intend to let the occasion pass by quietly.

Twumasi said: “We still haven’t done our initiation songs, we’ve been saving them up for when we get that win, so that’s the plan.”

TJ Bramble gave Dover a second-minute lead at Yeovil, with Adi Yussuf levelling 13 minutes from time.
