Triallists impress Southall in Charlton friendly

Dover Athletic 0 Charlton Athletic 2

DOVER manager Neville Southall used last night's friendly against Charlton to take a look at five players he is interested in bringing to Crabble.

Whites’ triallists were Millwall midfielder Rio Alderton, defender Kevin Seabury, who Southall knows from his time at Shrewsbury, Brighton striker Scott Ramsey, winger Simon Glover and ex-Swansea midfielder Kristian James. A crowd of 905 turned up to watch, and Southall said afterwards: “They all did OK to be fair.

"Scott Ramsey did well up front and you have to bear in mind that, if we do sign him, he will be playing alongside two experienced players up front (Keith Scott and Phil Stant), and that would make a difference to him.”

Ramsey looked Dover’s livliest forward, although it was Glover who almost gave Whites the lead after just two minutes when he lobbed ‘keeper Sasa Ilic but saw his effort bounce back off the bar. Charlton, watched by boss Alan Curbishley, featured a number of experienced players including Mark Kinsella, Matthias Svensson, Martin Pringle and Andy Todd.

And it was Pringle who gave them a half-time lead when he scored at the second attempt after Phil Smith had blocked his initial header. The second half saw Whites make nine substitutions as Southall took a look at as many different players as possible.

Tommy Tyne, now on loan at Welling, added some zest to Dover’s attack but it was Charlton who scored again after 66 minutes through substitute Alex Martin.

Southall added: “I enjoyed the game and we had another good gate despite Man Utd and Liverpool being on Tv. The referee didn’t notice it, but we actually finished the match with 12 men on the pitch. Mind you, it says something about us when we still couldn’t score!"

“Charlton came with a good strong team and showed they can play a bit. We put the kids on again towards the end to give them some more experience.

Dover: Smith (Hyde 53), Seabury, Leberl, Shearer (Cloke 81), Browne (Day 53), Alderton (Davies 64), James (White 87), Norman (Frost 89), Strouts (Ovard 87), Ramsey (Hickman 89), Glover (Tyne 46).
