Faversham cricket team wins first game after 29 years

One of the worst cricket teams in Kent have finally broken their winning duck – having gone 29 years without the taste of victory.

Since their launch in 1993, Faversham side The Motley Crew has failed to beat any of the pub or village 11s they have faced, regularly getting skittled out for totals of as little as 50.

Their unhappy record stumped bosses as they failed to notch their maiden triumph.

That was until Sunday, when the Crew edged out a side from boozer The Three Horseshoes in a nervy one-wicket win as they chased down 134 in Hernhill.

All-rounder Bobby Dolan, 31, told KentOnline: “I didn’t think this day would come, but to be fair we managed to sneak in a nets session on Wednesday.

“Usually our opponents would make over 200 quite comfortably in 25 or 30 overs, and we’d be lucky to make 50, 60. I can’t remember a game where we got more than 100 runs.

“The score tends to drift away from our minds when we bat because we never think we have a chance. Our bowling’s all right, but our batting’s just atrocious.”

The hapless side started its run chase brightly, as its number three blitzed a quick-fire 76.

But his wicket sparked a top-order collapse, leaving Bobby to guide the side home with a match-winning 28, while his number 11 stood at the other end.

“As the other batsmen were getting out, I realised I had to start hitting a few boundaries,” English teacher Bobby added.

“It was so tense towards the end. I came in at five and below me no one can really bat, so if it was bowled on the stumps they’d be out.

“It’s not usually about winning, but since Sunday we haven’t stopped talking about it.

“I don’t know if we’re the worst team in Kent, but we’d be in the bottom division.”

Motley Crew captain Tom Browning says there were “a fair few hangovers” the next morning as his team toasted its “crestfallen” opponents at The Three Horseshoes before hitting the town.

The 33-year-old – who started watching his dad Steve play for the team at the age of four – believes “memories might be slightly blurred of the celebrations that followed”.

“It’s always been about having a laugh, a few too many beers and a good day out – but to win a match was amazing,” the skipper added.

“It’s been a running joke that The Motley Crew always loses but with new blood in the team, maybe we’re at the start of 29 years of wins.”

The Motley Crew has a handful of fixtures scheduled for the rest of the summer, including a reverse fixture against The Three Horseshoes in September.

Steve, who founded the team in the 1990s, was scoring when the side clinched the win.

“They hit the winning runs with a boundary and a lot of the guys ran onto the pitch,” the former captain, 69, recalled.

“I was feeling elated. I don’t can’t recall anybody ever hitting a century - batting always used to be our downfall.”
