A row of derelict garages has become a “breeding ground for anti-social behaviour” and must be knocked down, says a concerned councillor.
The disused structures on the North Preston estate in Faversham were recently targeted in an arson attack, leading to further calls for action.
A photo taken after the incident in the early hours of April 8 shows the charred remains of one garage, with blackened concrete walls, collapsed roofing panels, and debris strewn across the ground.
Red and white safety tape now surrounds the fire-damaged structure in Reedland Crescent.
Now, Faversham Town Council member Cllr Rob Crayford (Lab) is calling on site owner Southern Housing to demolish the buildings.
“For too long, these garages have been allowed to deteriorate, creating an eyesore and a danger for our community,” he said.
“Southern Housing must act now - not only to demolish these structures, but to give the land back to local people.
“We need to invest in this neighbourhood, not abandon it.”
Residents have long raised concerns about the site, which has become a magnet for fly-tipping and loitering.
The suspected arson has intensified calls for action, with 163 people signing a petition calling for the garages to be demolished.
Cllr Crayford is now pushing for the space to be repurposed following consultation with residents.
Suggestions include community gardens, public green space, or safe recreational areas for families.
“Anti-social behaviour is legally identified as behaviour causing harassment, alarm or distress, and with your support, we can actively combat it,” he added.
“The area deserves a safe, peaceful and welcoming neighbourhood, and immediate steps should be taken to ensure these garages are reclaimed for the public good.”
He has also written to ward councillors asking them to increase pressure on Southern Housing and support the creation of an alcohol-free zone in the area as part of a wider strategy to tackle anti-social behaviour.
In a statement, Southern Homes told KentOnline it is “actively reviewing” the future of the site.
“We acknowledge the concerns raised by local stakeholders regarding the garage site at North Preston,” a spokesman said.
“We want to reassure the community that we’re actively reviewing the future use of this garage site along with others in the area.
“We’ve been assessing and surveying all sites to inform our long-term approach.
“Our overarching strategy is to retain our garage stock, giving the local community access to much-needed garages for rent.
“We’ll ensure residents and stakeholders are informed and consulted on any changes to this.
“We value community input and will provide further updates as our garage review progresses.”
