The budget brand is hoping to open 40 new stores in 2025.

For Faversham, it would be the town’s first Lidl.

It comes as the supermarket unveiled a half-a-billion-pound investment in expanding across the country.

Richard Taylor, chief development officer at Lidl GB, said: “This level of investment is a clear sign of our ambition.

“As we enter our fourth decade in Great Britain and hurtle towards a thousand stores, there are still so many parts of the country crying out for convenient access to a Lidl store.”

Kent already has 20 branches.

The retailer recently gained permission for another supermarket in Sheppey, despite significant pushback from rivals Tesco and Aldi.

Lidl itself also tried to keep competition away in Folkestone by objecting to a new Aldi on the former Silver Springs site.

It lodged a legal challenge to the build after plans had already been approved.
