As a result, the road was blocked in both directions and traffic was queueing.

However, all lanes had reopened by 9.30am.

A Kent Police spokesman said: "Police were called at around 8.05am after a lorry caught fire on the coast-bound carriageway of the A299 Thanet Way.

"Officers attended to assist Kent Fire and Rescue Service by closing the road in both directions due to heavy smoke. No injuries were reported.

The fire service said four fire engines attended the scene, as well as a bulk water carrier.

A spokesman added: "Crews wore breathing apparatus while using main and hose reel jets to extinguish the flames.

"No casualties were reported and the cause is not yet known."
