He was hit on the head with the bottles, suffering nasty cuts which required hospital treatment.

Following the shocking incident, which happened at around 4pm on Monday, April 15, police are now trying to trace the pair of teenage shoplifters who ran off.

The assault has also sparked anger in the town and concern for the victim, including from town mayor, Cllr Josh Rowlands.

“My sympathies are obviously with the victim because it just shouldn’t happen, and I hope he makes a speedy recovery,” he said.

“We value all our shopkeepers in the town who provide us with such great service and shouldn’t have to face this kind of behaviour.

Corita Goldhawk says she recently witnessed two lots of shoplifters in the store within a 10-minute period, who took items from the shelves and dashed out.

“I feel so sorry for the team who work there, as they are helpless,” she added.

“It's awful and the poor man will be traumatised for life, not to mention scarred for life,” wrote Natalie Taylor.
