Faversham left without a Morrisons after second closure in two years

A huge supermarket chain has shut its second shop in a town in as many years.

Morrisons’ Daily convenience store in Preston Street, Faversham, brought down the shutters for the final time last week.

It comes after the UK’s fifth largest supermarket chain pulled the plug on its massive North Lane site in September 2023 with bosses blaming poor performance.

Now, managers say they were forced to make the “unfortunate decision” to close the Daily shop, essentially a mini-Morrisons, on Friday after its lease with the landlord ended.

The moves leaves the town without a Morrisons branch.

In December 2023, Morrisons’ Daily operation replaced McColl’s after saving the firm from administration, as multiple shops were forced to close.

Meanwhile, rapidly expanding discount chain Home Bargains took over the empty North Lane building and opened in November last year following a £2.5 million overhaul.

Announcing the closure of the supermarket in July 2023, a Morrisons spokesman told KentOnline: “Following a thorough review of the Faversham store's operation, unfortunately we do not believe performance is sustainable.

“We are therefore announcing today that we have made the difficult decision to sell the store.

“We are endeavouring to communicate and execute these changes carefully and thoughtfully with all those affected.”
