Faversham Town manager James Collins pays tribute to friend and former assistant Nick Davis after victory over VCD

Faversham remain unbeaten in Isthmian South East after victory over their former assistant manager.

The Lilywhites edged Nick Davis’ VCD 1-0 at Salters Lane on Tuesday night, thanks to Kelvin Ogboe’s 40th-minute goal.

It was an excellent result after an energy-sapping 1-1 draw at Whitehawk on Saturday - Harry Harding with the goal - and one that moved them on to 12 points in sixth place.

Town boss James Collins is good friends with Davis, who worked as his No.2 last season before taking charge at the Vickers.

“I was a little worried because I didn’t know much Saturday would have taken out of the players,” said Collins, who welcomed back Matt Bourne after a negative Covid test.

“VCD hadn’t played on Saturday and I wasn’t sure how much we’d have left in the tank.

“But I thought we played well, we worked hard against a good side who moved us about and asked questions.

“We were able to find the answers and it’s another clean sheet.

“I always look at how many goals a team concedes and that’s three in six games so I’m well pleased.

“Me and Nick have been friends since primary school and our parents are friends.

“He helped me loads last season and he’s had a great start at VCD.

“I rang him on Wednesday morning because I know how much he cares and how much defeat bothers him - we suffered enough of them together last year!

“I hope he wins every other game, other than when he plays us.

“He deserves to be a No.1 again, he’s done well wherever he’s been and he’s got a good side together in six weeks at VCD.

“Twelve points is something for us to build on and I think we’ll get better.”

Faversham host Isthmian Premier side Haringey Borough in the FA Trophy third qualifying round this Saturday.

The Lilywhites’ only defeat this season came against higher-division Carshalton, 5-0 in the FA Cup, so Collins is keen to see how far they’ve come.

He said: “We’ve had them watched and it will be a nice little game for us to test ourselves against higher opposition again, and we’re at home this time.

“I thought we played well at Carshalton but they were ruthless in front of goal.

“I actually think that defeat helped us in the games we’ve had since.

“It will be interesting to see if we give Haringey a good game.”
