Tommy Warrilow was left frustrated as Faversham Town missed the opportunity to go top again on Saturday.
With VCD scoring a late equaliser to draw 1-1 at third-placed Fisher, victory for the Lilywhites would have seen them return to the Southern Counties East League Premier Division summit.
Instead, Town boss Warrilow saw his team held to a goalless draw at relegation-threatened Stansfeld.
Warrilow reflected: “It was just frustrating from our point of view.
“I’m not going to take any credit away from Stansfeld, they dug in and they had a couple of chances, as well. We just didn’t ask enough questions and we didn’t create a lot of clear-cut chances.
“But you need to take your hat off to them. They dug in and had a go to win themselves, and we needed to be careful not to come unstuck.
“From a positive point of view, we have got the gap down to one point. But we’re not going to dance around it - we missed a chance to go top.
“Even if we had, in one game, that can all change again.
“March is always the month where, if you’re going to go on a run to get into the play-offs or be challenging for promotion, you need to have a good month. All these draws do feel a bit like losses, but it’s another point on the board.
“We have got a good squad now and everyone is getting back to full fitness so there’s no excuses.”
Warrilow, whose troops host Sutton Athletic this weekend, feels Faversham’s rivals deserve plenty of credit for creating such an exciting promotion battle.
“We have only lost two league games all season,” he said. “It’s, obviously, the draws that are killing us.
“But fair play to, not just VCD, but everyone around us. They all seem to be having good seasons.
“Our home games are important but people love to come to our stadium and play on our pitch.
“They all - quite rightly - want to spoil the party. We try and do the same when we go away.
“I’m not building any game up as being a must-win. It’s too early in the run-in to put that kind of pressure on any game.
“But if it’s the last game of the season and there’s something on it, that’s different."
A positive from the stalemate at Stansfeld was a substitute appearance for fit-again midfielder Tommie Fagg.
Warrilow explained: “Faggie is coming back from a bit of time out so we got him five or 10 minutes, just to get him back on the pitch.
"We’ll work with him again in training this week. It’s important we get everyone right for the last couple of months, but we know what we’re getting from Faggie, anyway.
"He could play an integral part in our run-in.”
While Town are firmly in title contention, weekend visitors Sutton Athletic - a club that Warrilow has previous with - find themselves safely perched in 12th.
Warrilow, whose side will play them again at Lower Road on Wednesday, March 26, stated: “I’ve got a lot of history with the club.
“My two kids played for them when they were young and I’m glad to see them doing really well.
“It’s going to be a tough game because they have got an honest set of lads and they work to a structure.
“To have them twice in 10 days is a bit weird but that’s just the way it’s gone.
"Ultimately, we’ve just got to get on with things.”
