Faversham biker Finn Smart-Weeden crashes out at Brands Hatch in the NG Road Racing event

Finn Smart-Weeden pushed his bike a little too hard as he returned to racing for the first time this year.

His mechanic dad is set for a busy few days after the 14-year-old ended up sliding off at Graham Hill bend during racing at Brands Hatch, ending what had been an impressive return to the track.

The NG Road Racing event was taking place without spectators but the riders were able to get back in action, with Finn competing in the junior supersport class, which runs in the same race as Formula 400 and MiniTwin.

Finn had a good day of testing in freezing conditions on Friday, posting faster lap times in each session. On Saturday, he qualified first in class and third overall, giving him a front row start.

He took a convincing win, at least 10 seconds ahead of the next junior supersport competitor and sixth overall in the first race. Race two on Sunday morning saw another win and seventh overall.

It all went wrong, however, in Sunday’s final race.

After a blistering third lap, running fifth overall and first in class, more than a second ahead of second place, he pushed just a little bit too hard at the bend, tucked the front and sent the bike and himself flying across the grass.
