New Faversham signing Harrison Pont will need little introduction to fans - not that his new boss realised he had been the man behind a memorable penalty save against the club until recently.
Pont joined tall striker Eniye Amgbaduba in being announced as new arrivals for Tommy Warrilow’s Isthmian South East newcomers over the weekend.
A versatile midfielder, Pont saved a penalty from Gillingham icon Adebayo Akinfenwa on his Lilywhites home debut as he deputised in goal in Sittingbourne’s 1-0 Swale derby win at Salters Lane in March 2023.
But on ex-Dover and Herne Bay player Pont, rejoining Faversham, having played for them under James Collins just before Covid, Warrilow revealed: “I didn’t know that was him until someone told me the other day!
“I think he’s still only 23 or 24. He’s played a lot of football for someone of his age and, to play 30-odd games in Isthmian Premier, that’s nothing to be sniffed at. He can play at centre-back and in midfield, as well.
“When you put your hand up to go in goal, we had it with Jarred Trespaderne last year, there’s no real pressure on you. To save a penalty against Akinfenwa - a big name - that would have got highlighted everywhere!
“Like I say, I didn’t know that was him, but it’s handy to know he can do that.
“He’s been at Sittingbourne and I’ve spoken to Steve Lovell, who had him at Herne Bay.
“One thing we are going to sort out this year is Briggsy (No.2 Lewis Briggs) getting more game-time.
“Unfortunately every time Jacob (Russell, their No.1) was injured, Briggsy wasn’t available so that’s something we’re going to address.”
Pont and Amgbaduba, formerly at Whitstable and Fisher, will help fill the void left by midfielder Sam Hasler and forward Danny Parish.
They have exited the Southern Counties East League Premier Division winners to return to Ashford and Sittingbourne, respectively.
“They’re areas we were looking to add in,” noted Warrilow. “I’ve spoken to loads of players.
“It’s the same old thing, really, about levels so sometimes you just need to accept it and move on. These two players were highlighted to me. They’re both young and hungry.
“There was interest in them both, but we’ve managed to get them over the line because of our ambition.
“We’re not going up to make the numbers up.
“Eniye offers us another dimension but he offers more than just being tall. We were never going to bring loads in. Three went out so it doesn’t take Einstein to work out we were going to bring some in.
“We just needed to make sure they were the right fit.”
While Amgbaduba was part of Dover’s 2024/25 promotion-winning squad with brother Tamas Amgbaduba, he found first-team chances limited.
But Warrilow said: “He was unfortunate.
"Last year, their front three players all got 20-plus goals so it was hard for him.
“But speaking to the managers that he did play against, he was unplayable. If the team is playing really well, they’re not going to tinker with it too much.
“I know that he caused problems when he did play and I know his work-rate will be second to none.
“He’s 6ft 6in and I’m sure he’ll give everything he has got because I know Eniye from his time at Fisher.”
While Warrilow is comfortable with the squad he has got, the Lilywhites’ business is unlikely to be done just yet this summer.
He said: “There will be fall-out from other clubs. That happens every year.
“Some people are promised stuff and some just don’t enjoy it.
"We will keep our eyes on some players but we have got our under-23s and 14 or 15 (senior) players.
“We’ll just see what happens in the next few weeks.”
