Faversham Town joint boss Danny Chapman pleased with progress Lilywhites are making

Danny Chapman believes that Faversham’s draw against Phoenix Sports on Saturday underlined the potential within the squad.

Town led 2-0 before conceding twice in the last 12 minutes, and while frustrated not to have won, joint-boss Chapman was pleased with the performance against a side who are in the top eight of Bostik South East.

He said: “It was a good result but it could have been a great one, we played ever so well.

“We were well in control for nearly 80 minutes and if we’d have hung on just for five minutes after we’d gone 2-0 up I’ve no doubt we would have won.

“We should have been out of sight. We must have created seven or eight clear-cut chances and had we won 5-2 I don’t think anyone could have argued.

“They are supposed to be one of the division’s better teams, so if that’s the benchmark I don’t think we’ll be in any trouble.”

Harry Goodger gave Town the lead just before the break with Luke Griffiths making it 2-0 on 77 minutes having come on as a half-time substitute for Matt Bourne, who rolled his ankle.

Phoenix pulled a goal back straight from the restart after Town’s second and Chapman admitted that was disappointing.

He added: “We’d just said let’s be nice and compact and let’s have five minutes where they don’t get any chances, but we had a lapse of concentration which allowed them to carve their way through. We could have done better with both their goals which was disappointing.

“Phil (joint-boss Phil Miles) said afterwards that he was pleased with a point, but I went the other way. I felt we should have won.”

Chapman feels Town’s players are starting to feel the benefits of increased training but the new schedule has led to Jack Harris and Dean Grant leaving the club.

Neither could commit as regularly as the management wanted, with Grant joining Canterbury City in the Southern Counties East League Premier Division.

Faversham are without a game on Saturday so the players will train in the morning before Chapman heads off to watch Horsham – Town’s opponents at home on January 5 – play at Haywards Heath.

Faversham’s next game is at home to Ashford United on Boxing Day, kick-off 3pm.

n Renford Tenyue reached a notable milestone at Phoenix when he made his 260th appearance for the Lilywhites.
