Faversham's Finn Smart-Weeden has 100mph crash at Donington Park as well as best finish of the season

Finn Smart-Weeden suffered a 100mph crash but still managed to register his best finishing position during an eventful weekend at Donington Park.

His season ended up with an off in the gravel but there was plenty to be happy about after the 13-year-old showed big improvements throughout in the Junior SuperSport championship.

The weather on Friday and Saturday was atrocious and in a very wet practice session on Friday, the Faversham racer frightened his parents by posting a third fastest lap before then suffering a high-speed crash.

Thankfully the young rider was fine but it meant much repair work for his mechanic dad. With the bike fixed, Smart-Weeden managed to qualify in fifth out of 36 riders, beating his previous best qualifying position of 18th.

Wet weather meant race one was postponed until the Sunday and after a reasonable start the youngster managed to finish eighth, his best finish of the season, contrasting sharply with the first race of the season when he was 28th.

Race two didn’t end so well. While fighting a four-way battle for 13th he got sandwiched and with nowhere to go he ended up in the gravel.

Despite the frustrating end it had been a good final weekend as the rider - one of only two 13-year-olds competing - showed what big improvements he has made, outdoing the team’s expectation.

He thanked Santander Salt Tag Racing and his main supporters, R&G, LS2 Helmets and Scott Leathers whose products made sure the damage to him and his bike were minimised.
