Faversham manager James Collins says putting his stamp on things will take time

James Collins says Faversham may have to go backwards to go forwards.

The Lilywhites lost 2-0 at home to local rivals Whitstable at the weekend, with boss Collins describing the performance as unacceptable.

However, he wasn’t entirely surprised, with the team going through a transitional phase under their new manager.

Collins said: “We were dreadful – it was a really poor performance.

“You kind of expect it when you’re putting new players together and you haven’t had much time on the training ground but it was an unacceptable performance.

“We’re a bit light on quality but I didn’t see a great deal of work rate, which is something that needs to be addressed.

“It’s disappointing because we had a good gate there and I’m not sure we gave them anything to feel positive about.

“We’re in transition and we will get better but sometimes you have to go backwards to go forwards.

“Players know if they want to stay at the club they have to start putting in performances but we also take responsibility as a management team.

“I am making a lot of changes and with that comes indifferent performances.

“We’re trying to sort a few things out but it’s going to be a bit up in their air for the next three months before it really settles down.

“We’re wheeling and dealing trying to improve the squad week on week but this is a long-term project.

“I want to finish as high as we can this season but I’m looking to the future and really putting my stamp on things.

“Like I’ve said, it’s one in, one out at the moment and it’s hard to strengthen mid-season because most players I’d be in the market for are doing well at their clubs.”

Faversham take on Whyteleafe at Salters Lane on Saturday and complete a run of three Isthmian South East home games against struggling Ramsgate on Tuesday.

Fans should get to see more of striker Josh Beadle, who worked with Collins at Chatham, and midfielders Tom Loynes and Stefan Wright.

Collins said: “I really like Josh, he can be as good as he wants to be.

“Stefan is someone I tried to sign at Chatham last season, so I know him, and Tom’s one who became available at Sittingbourne.

“He needs games – he’s not played at all this year – but he can be a great addition for us.”
