Armed police seen arresting man in Folkestone

Armed police have arrested a man and seized a weapon.

Firearms officers were spotted pinning the man to the ground in Folkestone.

Witnesses in George Lane saw the officers surround the suspect, who was believed to be carrying a knife.

One witness said: "I heard shouting, a number of voices telling the man to get on the floor and put his hands on his head.

"They then removed a weapon from him – I couldn't see what it was exactly.

"I heard them radio in saying they had a dangerous suspect, and shortly afterwards another four officers turned up with guns.

"There were eight armed officers in total along with a German Shepherd."

The suspect was then seen being led away in handcuffs to a waiting police car.

The police helicopter was also seen circling overhead to support ground teams.

A police spokesman confirmed a man had been detained and a knife had been seized.

He said: "Kent Police was called at 1.52pm following a report that a man had been seen with a possible weapon in Rendezvous Street, Folkestone.

"Officers, including armed officers, attended and a 26-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of possession of an offensive weapon.

"A knife has been seized and enquiries into the circumstances surrounding the incident are ongoing."
