Plans to transform ‘modern’ barn at Longage Manor Farm, Lyminge into wedding venue

A “modern” barn on farmland could be transformed into a countryside wedding and events venue under new plans.

Julia Riley, owner of Longage Manor Farm in Lyminge, has lodged proposals to use the building as a “small” events space called The Barn.

She is aiming to host weddings, corporate events and community activities at the site off Longage Hill.

Documents lodged with the application, submitted to Folkestone and Hythe District Council (FHDC), outline plans to use the previously converted agricultural barn for the new venture.

The remainder of the farm – including the listed farmhouse and another barn – is not included in the scheme.

Ms Riley said in planning documents: “We propose to establish The Barn at Longage Manor Farm as a small premier venue for a limited number of weddings/celebrations, weekly community/charity events and a few corporate functions.”

If approved, weddings would take place about once every four to six weeks, with a small number of other weekly events including team-building workshops, training days, and charity or community gatherings.

Ms Riley says the site could be used by Age UK “to support local village initiatives”.

The charity’s Lyminge branch closed last year after bosses said they “simply could not sustain” monthly losses of between £15,000 and £34,000.

“The Barn will be dedicated to community outreach,” Ms Riley said.

“The commitment will not only provide valuable services to the community but will also help foster goodwill towards the venue.”

The venue would be limited to operating no more than 20 hours a week and would shut by midnight on wedding days.

The site would include a 690 sq m car park, with space for 40 vehicles, two minibuses and four disabled bays.

According to Ms Riley, the scheme would create jobs and benefit the rural economy as bosses would work with Kent-based suppliers and services.

FHDC is expected to make a decision on the plans by August 2.
