Folkestone Town Council cancels Christmas lights switch on due to predicted heavy rain and high winds

A Christmas lights switch-on has been cancelled due to safety concerns with Storm Bert predicted to batter the UK this weekend.

Folkestone Town Council (FTC) was set to host its big light switch on Saturday at Guildhall Street, but has told people it’s now not going ahead.

It’s because high winds and rain is predicted to hit Kent this weekend, forcing the local authority to announce this evening they are postponing the festivities.

A spokesman for the local authority said: “Unfortunately, the weather predicted for Saturday has not improved, with the forecast of strong winds and heavy rain.

“One of the council's main priorities is the health and safety of the general public.

“With the large number of children involved in the parade, Christmas market traders, scheduled activities and performances, and expected crowd attendance, it would be considered dangerous to hold the event.”

In addition to the Christmas light switch-on, the free event was set to include school choir performances, live music, and a celebrity guest appearance.

Last week, Folkestone’s Creative Quarter held an event where comedian and Absolutely Fabulous star Helen Lederer switched on the lights as part of the Creative Folkestone Book Festival.

Previously, East 17 took part in two of Kent’s festive events.

The group best known for the 1990s Christmas classic ‘Stay Another Day’ performed at Westwood Cross in Broadstairs before heading to the evening switch-on in Folkestone Town Centre.
