Folkestone and Hythe’s latest planning bid includes railway carriage home and new flats

Plans to restore a historic railway carriage home and build new flats are among the latest applications submitted to a council.

On Dungeness Road in Dungeness, proposals would add a single-storey extension, re-roof the property, and link a 19th-century railway carriage to another vintage wagon already incorporated into the home.

The project follows the closure of the Lydd Railway Company’s Dungeness branch in 1937, when redundant carriages were sold to local workers, many of whom hauled them onto the shingle to use as makeshift homes.

One carriage remains within the house today, its curved roofline still visible, while a second from the former Great Eastern Railway line sits alongside and is set to be restored to its original deep red colour.

The plans aim to connect the two historic carriages beneath a train-shed-style canopy, similar to those once used to store locomotives overnight. Architects SJM Design say they were inspired by nearby buildings such as Pobble House and the WW2 Pump House.

Documents note that the approval of Mr Doodle’s house earlier this year demonstrates Folkestone and Hythe District Council’s “openness to expressive, narrative-led architecture” in the area.

Elsewhere in the district, plans have been submitted to convert part of an office building on Dover Road, Folkestone, into four self-contained flats, including new shopfronts.
