Plans submitted for takeaway in West Terrace, Folkestone

Plans have been submitted to transform an empty shop in Folkestone into a hot food takeaway.

The proposal is for 2 West Terrace, which was previously occupied by Warrens Bakery and Carphone Warehouse, and is next to Iceland and near McDonalds.

But the shop is now empty and, subject to planning permission, could open and start serving food.

It is not known what sort of food the shop will sell, but the application also seeks permission to instal an external extract flue.

The design and access statement states: "The proposal is to create a new hot food takeaway at ground floor of the premises.

"The front section will include a seating area and the rear will include a kitchen with grille.

"To provide the necessary extraction from the grille, the proposal is to instal an extract hood over the grille with a flue leading straight out of the existing wall.

"This duct will lead out to the rear courtyard adjacent to the carpark and will turn upwards, terminating with a cowl at roof level."

The plans have been submitted by Sandeep Singh, with designs from Profile Architects, based in Folkestone.

They have been submitted to Folkestone and Hythe District Council, and a decision could be reached by next month.

One comment on the plans raises concerns about increased traffic the new venture could bring.

It reads: "Unless a speed camera is put up near the start of The Leas, I object to the plans.

"It is only a matter of time before someone will be seriously injured, or worse. Since the original lockdown in 2020, at least 95% of the traffic do not comply with the 20mph speed limit.

"It is so noisy that I have to increase the volume of the TV to drown out the traffic noise.

"By allowing yet another hot food takeaway, even more drivers will be speeding to deliver hot food."
