Pictures show smoke billowing from the vehicle as four fire engines and two bulk water carriers work to clear the scene.

Crews used main jets, hose reel jets and compressed air foam systems to extinguish the flames.

According to a police spokesperson “no serious injuries have been reported”.

Recovery of the vehicle has taken place but the route remained closed while emergency repairs to the road surface took place.

Drivers were advised to exit the M20 London-bound at junction 12 and join the A20, Ashford Road, before rejoining at junction 11.

The cause of the fire is not yet known.

At 7.11pm, National Highways posted on X to say all lanes had been reopened and the motorway was clear.
