Firefighters were called at midnight following reports of the cars alight in Marine Terrace near the harbour opposite the Oynx nightclub.

One fire engine was called to the incident and the crew spent 40 minutes putting out the flames.

It is believed the fire had spread to the second car - thought to be a Suzuki - after being started in the Ford.

A spokesman for Folkestone fire station said the matter had now been passed onto the police to investigate.

A Kent Police spokesman added: "It is being treated as suspicious and investigated as an arson."

Witnesses are asked to call police on 101 quoting crime reference ZY/27147/15 or call Kent Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
