Folkestone Library closed - a week after heavy storms hit the county

A library is currently closed after heavy storms left it badly water damaged.

Folkestone Library was flooded early last week after the county saw a month's worth of rain fall in a single day.

The severe weather led to Kent Police warning drivers to only take to the roads if absolutely necessary.

The extent of the damage at the Grace Hill library is yet to be revealed after water leaked into the building.

It is not known when it will re-open.

In the meantime, Kent County Council say the opening hours at other libraries will be extended during the closure, so that visitors can still use the facilities.

The local authority is also re-assuring readers that any over due books will not endure a fine while the site is out of action.

A spokesman for the council said: "Folkestone Library is currently closed, due to flooding caused by the recent heavy storms.

"The damage is being assessed and at the moment it is not possible to confirm when the building in Grace Hill will re-open.

"In the meantime, customers are advised to use the libraries in Cheriton, Wood Avenue, Hythe, Sandgate or Lyminge.

"Further information will be issued as soon as the situation is clearer."

Cheriton Library and Wood Avenue Library will be open extra hours from June 15-22 inclusive.
