The child is a girl of primary school age.

A Kent Police spokesman said this morning: " The girl remains in hospital but her injuries are not believed to be life threatening."

"The man has been discharged from hospital."

The incident brought a huge emergency services response with several ambulances and police cars and an air ambulance landing at the neighbouring Radnor Park.

Police say were called to the scene, where a red Ford Fiesta has been seen with a shattered windscreen, shortly before 2.30pm.

The road had to be closed between Cheriton Road and Bournemouth Road while emergency services dealt with the incident.

Serious crash investigators were at the scene taking photographs and measurements.

The scene attracted the attention of several bystanders as many people were at the park during sunny weather.

Maria Sadler, barmaid at the nearby Park Inn, told Kent Online yesterday: "When the air ambulance arrived it stayed on the ground for about 40 minutes.

"It made me guess they were treating a patient inside it.

"There were several ambulance and police cars, some of the police cars unmarked."
