Policeman faces smuggling charge

A KENT police officer man appeared in court today accused of smuggling.

Custody sergeant Boyd Adams, who is based at Folkestone, is accused of evading £6,895 in duty between August 2000 and January 21 this year.

The charges relate to cigarettes and hand-rolled tobacco. Mr Adams spoke only to confirm his name and address when he appeared before magistrates at Dover.

The case was adjourned until Monday, February 17, while the Crown Prosecution Service carries out further inquiries. The officer has been suspended from duty.

Mr Adams was released on unconditional bail by the magistrates.
