It marks the end of an era for the much-loved eatery, which has earned rave reviews from top chefs and food critics alike.

In a statement posted online, owners Polly Pleasence and Dave Hart revealed they plan to take a break before working on their next project.

"Our time at 5 Church Street is drawing to a close. After almost eight years of trading, we have decided that we will be calling time on The Folkestone Wine Company,” they said.

"Our lease will come to an end in May and we feel this is as good a time as any to take a sabbatical, rest and recharge before we start work on our next project.

"We will continue trading until the middle of May.

“For those who are yet to visit and those who wish to dine with us one last time, you have until lunchtime on the 18th May, which will be our final service.

“We look forward to seeing you soon."

A number customers have expressed their sadness at the news.

RA Williams said: “Some of our best memories of Folkestone include our dinners at Folkestone Wine Company.

“The Bayle area will not be the same without your little, lovely restaurant. Good luck in your next endeavor.”

John Ricketts added: “What you've achieved in that time is nothing short of astounding.

“All the praise and accolades are so deserved.

“Enjoy your rest. I know you'll get itchy feet and be back in no time.”

The Folkestone Wine Company was opened in 2015 after chef Dave Hart took over the town centre site, formerly Linda’s Tea Room.

Over the years, it has become renowned for its French-inspired cuisine and its commitment to using high-quality ingredients sourced from across Europe.

In September 2023, the restaurant was featured in a list of top UK eateries compiled by renowned chef Angela Hartnett. Praising the “phenomenal” food, she described the venue as “a relaxed place for a really easy lunch or supper with, obviously, amazing wine”.

The venue has also been recognised by The Times, appearing several times on its list of Britain's 20 best places to eat on the coast, while The Guardian ranked it sixth on its list of the best seafood restaurants around the UK coast in 2021-22.

Dishes at the restaurant – which changes its menu daily – have included diver-caught scallops with lemon beurre blanc, and crispy duck served with beetroot and blood orange salad.

Polly, the daughter of actor Donald Pleasence, and Dave have been at the helm throughout.

The restaurant’s final service will take place at lunchtime on Saturday, May 18.
