Strike threat to Channel Tunnel

THE Channel Tunnel could be forced to close if firefighters go ahead with a national strike, it is feared.

Although strike action has not been confirmed plans are under way to cover the contingency.

Kevin Charles, a spokesman for Eurotunnel, said: "There has been no ballot yet, although the fire brigade union has indicated there could be distruption to transport services, which includes the Channel Tunnel.

"We are aware of the threat and are talking to the Kent and Medway fire authority and their counterparts in France."

A spokesman for Kent Fire Brigade said: "The situation isn't clear at the moment. I am waiting for a statement from the safety committee from the tunnel. But I believe there is a possibility it would have to close."
