Temporary shelters set to be installed this week at Folkestone’s new bus station in Middelburg Square

Temporary shelters are being installed at a town centre’s bus station this week following delays to permanent replacements.

The coverings are going up along Middelburg Square in Folkestone to protect passengers from bad weather.

Contractor Bauer Media Outdoor (BMO) has been unable to install the permanent shelters for the new bus station due to supply chain delays.

These final structures, designed specifically for the A Brighter Future scheme, are now not expected to be fitted until early next year.

The temporary versions will remain in place through the winter, with overnight work taking place to minimise disruption.

Cllr James Butcher, Folkestone & Hythe District Council’s cabinet member for the district economy, said: “The delay to the permanent shelters has been disappointing but we’ve been working hard with Bauer Media Outdoor to ensure that temporary shelters are in place to shield bus users as we go into the colder months.”

The F3 bus stop in Middelburg Square, which serves routes to Downs Road, Folkestone Harbour and Dover, is being temporarily moved to Bouverie Place behind the old station and opposite Burger King.

Work on the stop relocation begins on Wednesday and is expected to last two weeks to allow construction in the square to continue.

Four parking bays in Bouverie Square will also close during this time while the diversion is in place.

Authorities say all temporary stop locations will be “clearly signposted”.

Bosses say Stagecoach, Kent County Council, Jackson Civil Engineering and Folkestone & Hythe District Council are working together to minimise disruption and keep passengers informed.

The wider A Brighter Future scheme is more than a third complete, with the entire project - including a new park on the former bus station site - due to finish in summer 2026.

Previously, KentOnline reported that residents had branded plans to move the transport terminal “ridiculous”, fearing a replacement green area would attract “undesirable” people.
