The Folkestone Rugby Club event was due to take place on Sunday but incoming wind and rain has forced the decision, which was confirmed in a Facebook post today.

A statement read: "Unfortunately, due to the appalling weather conditions our firework night has been cancelled.

"Sorry, and we hope you enjoy your Sunday!"

The news has saddened many who were looking forward to the event.

Sharing the post, the 'Folkestone Status' page said: "Let's hope that England and Wales have better luck in the Rugby World Cup!"

A yellow weather warning for wind is predicted for the whole county, and heavy rain is forecast for Saturday afternoon and most of Sunday in the area.

The Met office predicts a dry start to Saturday, but says that coastal gales are likely, potentially at a severe rate.

It is not yet clear whether any other fireworks displays in the area will go ahead, or how the adverse weather will affect other events.

It was thought that the outside screening of the Rugby World Cup final at Folkestone Harbour Arm's Harbour Screen could be under threat, but a spokesman has confirmed that it will continue.

He said: "The bad weather isn't going to be coming in until much later in the day, and the screen is sheltered.

"We really hope that the England fans come out and support the team, there are so few outside screenings this world cup and we feel like this is very important, so we will absolutely be carrying on."
