A charity has helped distribute more than 6,000 meals in just a few months.
A six month audit of the community pantry at Greenhithe's Mary’s Child charity has calculated that the produce collected and distributed has converted into almost 6,000 meals.
The food and toiletries are donated by shoppers at ASDA Greenhithe, then collected and sorted by Mary’s Child volunteers, and distributed to families identified by local schools and other agencies as needing additional support. The charity has also distributed toiletries, including more than 400 toilet rolls.
Responsible for sorting the produce and coordinating its distribution, Mary’s Child charity secretary, Marion Lane, said: “We are continually overwhelmed by the generosity of our local community.
"Greenhithe ASDA shoppers’ continued support of our pantry has made a huge difference to so many people’s lives. But unfortunately as quickly as the pantry fills, so it empties. But we want to say a massive thanks to everyone who donates produce and ASDA for looking after it for us.”
The Mary’s Child charity is jointly managed by the St Mary Greenhithe and Stone churches.
It takes turns with the Swanscombe Larder and Dartford Food Bank to collect donated food and toiletries from ASDA Greenhithe.
The charity has also received food supplies from B and M Stores, Dartford Borough and Swanscombe and Greenhithe Town councils, the Kent Community Foundation, Lovelies by Holly, Finlay and many individuals from around the community.
