It was reportedly spotted driving "erratically" down Harmer Street before losing control at the Clock Tower junction shortly before 5pm on Sunday.

The vehicle flattened a bollard before crashing into the side of anglers' shop, NJ Fishing Tackle.

Police say the driver then abandoned the car and fled on foot.

In the aftermath, the angling supplier says it has sustained at least £4,000 worth of damage inside after its display unit containing rods and other anglers' equipment came crashing down.

Amber Jennings, office manager at NJ Fishing Tackle, says they were only made aware of the damage after a customer got in touch with the shop via Facebook.

She was told a witness pursued the motorist on foot but lost sight of them shortly after.

Ms Jennings said: "From what we know about the incident, the driver was driving erratically and dangerously down Harmer Street, crashed into what we believe is two/three other cars, went into the bollard outside of the shops and beached itself on top of it.

"The bollard did save our shop, but has still managed to do about £4,000 worth of damage internally."

Ms Jennings says the shop reopened yesterday but some of the damage, including the trampled bollard remained outside at the last time of checking.

The store is continuing to appeal for any witnesses to come forward and share the information with police.

"It is quite a difficult road to lose control on," she added.

"The last time we heard from the police they were looking for the driver and had not had any luck."
