A man has died following a late-night crash involving two cars and a cyclist.

It happened in Northfleet, near Gravesend, on High Street at the junction for Vicarage Drive, at around 11.30pm.

The cyclist, who was in his 70s, was treated at the scene by ambulance crews but was pronounced dead at the scene.

His next of kin have been informed.

Police spokesman Martin Very said: "A 33-year-old man from Gravesend was arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and driving whilst unfit through alcohol or drugs.

"He remains in police custody."

Anita Norris, of Vale Road, Northfleet, was at the Rose Pub, in Wood Street, when her 14-year-old daughter Paige, who was on her way home, rang her saying she had seen a crash and asked for help.

The 52-year-old said: "My daughter rang us to say what had happened, as we thought it was one of them we told her to come back to us and that's when she went into our local pub to see if anyone would be able to help as there was a couple of people there with the man.

"Paige was in shock and we was just trying to get to hear what she was trying to tell us."

Two men who were already with the victim when Anita's daughter and her friend had ran to the pub to try and find more help.

One man who was at the scene praised the emergency services for their efforts and other people in the area who flocked to help the man.
