Halloween decorations take over garden at Romney Road, Northfleet

Could this be a new contender for the crown of the most haunted house in Kent this Halloween?

The spooky decorations fill every corner of Paul Matthews' front garden at his Northfleet home.

The 57-year-old said: "We do it for the community. We have always done it for the community.

"It is for the fun of Halloween and bringing a smile on people's faces. That's what it is all about."

The impressive display in Romney Road features three witches huddled around a cauldron chanting, a dancing Frankenstein, Jack Skellington from The Nightmare Before Christmas and plenty of lights and pumpkins.

Paul commented that he "hasn't a clue" how many decorations he has put up as he continues to put the finishing touches on it.

He added: "It doesn't matter what it costs. It is there to give people a smile and give people a Halloween cheer. That's what it is all about."

The self-employed oil industry inspector is known amongst the Painter's Ash community for his equally bright Christmas display which he has done for 11 years.

He again said he does it "for the enjoyment" and the community but six years ago he decided to dedicate the lights to ellenor hospice.

The dad-of-five and grandad to 10 chose to collect donations for the hospice as it has helped his family throughout the years and is close to them.

This year ellenor has asked Paul to dress as Santa for the charity's celebrations at Cyclopark Gravesend which he said he is "honoured and nervous to do".

Eagle-eyed visitors will notice some Christmas decorations up behind the Halloween display as Paul prepares for his light switch on on Friday, November 26 at 7pm.

His spooky decorations have only taken a couple of days in total to put up but said he has spent around 37 days putting up the Christmas ones before.

Paul is not the only one to go to town with their Halloween decorations this year, a family in Rainham have taken the street down the spooky path.
