This is the moment a drunk man intimidated a home owner with a metal baseball bat.
Daniel Babb, of Wallis Park in Northfleet, had already scared a neighbour by banging on his balcony with the bat before he turned up and knocked on another's door.
The 26-year-old claimed he had picked it up for protection and did not intend to use it during the incident on February 2, 2023.
He later admitted the charge of being in possession of an offensive weapon in public and was sentenced at Medway Magistrates' Court on March 27.
Lucie Fish, prosecuting, told the court the first incident happened at about 8.30pm that night.
She added: “ A neighbour was walking her dog and could see her neighbour swinging the bat (from his flat).
“She told him to stop and he shouted abuse at her and she could see the metal baseball bat.”
The court heard Babb was captured on video doorbell camera at around 9.30pm, at a home belonging to someone he knew, with the baseball bat in his hand.
The footage played to the bench shows the homeowner opening the door and asking Babb what he was doing with the bat.
The person at the door can be seen calling the police.
The neighbour who had seen him brandishing the bat earlier from his flat also wrote a victim impact statement to say she had been frightened by the experience and didn’t sleep well as she deemed his behaviour as unpredictable. She said she felt unsafe when her partner wasn’t home.
The prosecutor added: “He has previous convictions for criminal damage and common assault and it was his account that he was intoxicated (at the time)."
A probation officer who had interviewed Babb told the court he was estranged from his family.
The officer added: “He was emotional but didn’t get into the reasons why, but they’ve not spoken to him for three years and earlier that day he had tried to speak with his younger brother but it didn’t go the way he intended and he regretted saying some things. His brother terminated the call.
"He then drank some cans of lager, but it was 9% proof, so very strong lager indeed.
“He got frustrated and smashed his phone as he couldn’t apologise, and he then got the bat and started hitting the wall and later had to replaster it himself.
“He was banging it against the wall and it infuriated another resident. He went down to remonstrate and he was then chased, cornered and assaulted and broke free. He never reported it (to police).
“As for the doorbell footage, he had the bat to protect himself. It was for his own safety, but he was out of his depth by that point. He had not intended to do anything with it.
“He’s taken on a dog recently, and it’s now nine months old and it relieves his stress (looking after it). He’s moderated his drinking to once or twice a month, so alcohol is not a problem for him.
“He’s at a low likelihood of reoffending, and could do with support and rehabilitation sessions would be appropriate.”
Magistrates then asked Bab how he would like it if someone turned up at his door with a baseball bat in his hand, and said it was intimidating behaviour on his part.
They then placed Babb on a 12-month community order which will see him carry out 100 hours of unpaid work and attend 20 rehabilitation sessions and said the bat would be destroyed.
He was also ordered to pay a victim surcharge of £114 and £85 court costs and will pay what he owes the court at a rate of £20 a month.
