Coronavirus Kent: Fundraisers set up for staff at Medway Maritime and Darent Valley hospitals

An online fundraiser to help support health workers has already benefited those working on the frontline.

The Medway Hospital Charity has raised half of its £10,000 target after it set up a JustGiving to raise money for staff at the Gillingham hospital.

The initial target was originally set at £5,000, but having been reached within days, it was doubled.

Some of the money raised on the page has gone towards care package containing tea, coffee and snacks which were put together by the hospital's catering staff, which were due to be delivered to staff this week.

The rest is set to be spent on improving the hospital's dementia garden and creating a wellbeing hub containing rocking chairs, lamps, yoga mats, plants, games and colouring books.

The hospital, which serves Medway and Swale, has 4,500 members of staff.

Meanwhile, an unofficial fundraiser has been set up to support health workers at Darent Valley in Dartford.

The GoFundMe page originally set out to raise £100 had now surpassed £400.

It was set up by Kelly Clarke who wrote on the page: "Whilst on maternity leave from being an NHS physio, I have been feeling guilty about not being able to help fight Covid-19 with my friends and colleagues.

"I would love to help raise a little bit of money to put a smile on the faces of those working hard at Darent Valley Hospital whilst we all stay at home."
