A diversion route is in place on the road, which connects Gravesend and Strood, and delays are expected in the area.

SGN spokesperson Simon Collins said: “We’re currently working in the Gravesend Road area of Higham to fix a gas leak running beneath the road.

“In order to keep the public and our colleagues safe while we work, we have closed Gravesend Road at its junctions with Pear Tree Lane and Crutches Lane.

“This is a complex repair, and we can’t yet say how long our work will take.

“We’ll be working around the clock to make the area safe and complete a full repair.”

The gas company has been approached for further information.
