Swanscombe man ordered to pay compensation for damage to Silk bar in Gravesend

A Swanscombe man has pleaded guilty to causing £400 damage at a nightclub.

Jordan Savage, 24, of Broomfield Road, appeared at Medway Magistrates' Court this morning charged with breaking a window at the Silk Bar in Parrock Street, Gravesend.

CCTV footage was shown of Savage brandishing a concrete object on the night of Friday, August 30.

The court heard how the defendant smashed the window above the entrance to the bar after being confronted by a bouncer when a fight broke out.

Mr Sweeney, prosecuting, told the court: "A concrete slab went through the window narrowly missing a member of the public."

He asked the court to consider a restraining order be placed on the defendant should it be "deemed proportionate".

This would have banned him from coming into contact with Mel Ibrahim, who was the manager of the bar when the incident took place.

Chairman of the bench Lynn Stoneman decided against imposing a restraining order but said a fine would be too lenient in the circumstances.

She told the court: "We find that it was quite reckless. Throwing a rock could have had serious consequences.

"Therefore we are going to give you a community order for 40 hours of unpaid work to be completed within 12 months."

Savage pleaded guilty to criminal damage. Described by his lawyer as being self employed and "earning a good income", he was ordered to pay £400 compensation to the nightclub owner for the damage.

He was instructed to pay a victim surcharge and prosecution costs, bringing the total to £575.

An exclusion order was also placed on Mr Savage banning him from visiting the Silk Bar for 12 months.
