Lawn Primary School to remain shut for asbestos clear-up following fire at nearby Portlands building in Northfleet High Street

Pupils will not be returning to school until later next week as clear-up operations continue following a major blaze at a nearby former social club.

Lawn Primary School in Northfleet was due to open earlier this week after half-term.

But it was forced to stay closed after asbestos was found in the debris from the fire at the Portlands building.

Crews were called to the High Street just before 11.30pm on Sunday (October 26), and at its height, eight fire engines, a height vehicle and a bulk water carrier were at the scene.

It was confirmed on Tuesday (October 28) that asbestos was found within the debris of the fire, although it was said there were “no significant health concerns”.

Specialist contractors started clear-up works in Factory Road and moved on to Lawn Primary School and the family hub yesterday (October 30).

However, a Kent County Council (KCC) spokesperson has since confirmed today (October 31) that the school will not reopen until later next week as crews need more time.

They said: "Following the major fire at Portlands building in Northfleet, nearby Lawn Primary School remains closed for clean-up.

“Every effort is being made to carry out this work as quickly as possible, but the specialist team needs several days to finish, so the school is now expected to re-open later next week.

“We know this will be disappointing news to some, but the health and safety of children and staff is of paramount importance.

“The school is keeping parents and carers updated, students will continue with remote learning using Class Dojo, and we thank everyone for their ongoing patience."

A spokesman said the family hub team is in touch with all residents who need routine appointments re-arranged. However, if you urgently need family hub support, visit Your local family hub - Kent County Council to find your nearest alternative.

It comes as the police release CCTV of two men they would like to speak to, who they believe may be able to assist their investigation.

They would also like to speak to the owner of a car which was seen near the scene at the time.

Northfleet High Street is still closed between the Hot Rod Diner and Factory Road, due to concerns that part of Portlands, also known as the Factory Club, could collapse.

Work is due to start at 9am tomorrow (November 1) to demolish the chimney on the eastern side of the Grade-II listed property and bring it level of the rest of the building.

It is expected to be completed by early afternoon, and measures will be in place to avoid disturbance of the remaining debris on site, including damping down of dust to prevent its spread.

The building dates back to 1878 and was built by cement manufacturer Thomas Bevan.

Although it has been empty for more than 30 years, the property was once a hub for the area and used to have its own outdoor pool and a stage.
