Strong winds and unsettled conditions are causing higher water levels than normal in the area and a flood alert has been issued.

The walkways around St Andrew's Quay, West Street, where LV21 lightship is docked, have been largely submerged under water.

Aerial images show sections of the promenade next to the Fort Gardens, known as 'The Dell' have also been heavily affected.

A flood alert is currently in place for the section of the coast between Dartford and Allhallows.

High tides are expected to affect coastal and tidal locations this afternoon with flooding possible two hours either side between 2pm and 6pm today.

Earlier today the Thames Barrier was closed, as well as the Dartford Creek Barrier, which controls the tidal River Darent.

The unsettled weather is likely to continue over the coming days, although tides are expected to begin reducing from Monday evening.

People are urged to exercise caution around the coast and avoid contact with flood waters.

The next flood alert update will be issued at 7pm this evening.
