Gravesend marks Merchant Navy Day

Services have been held to mark Merchant Navy Day.

A ceremony was held, as usual, at the memorial in Bawley Bay, Anchor Cove, in Royal Pier Road, Gravesend .

It was attended by a few veterans and dignitaries, including Gravesham mayor Cllr John Caller.

In Gravesend's Community Square, the council flew the Red Ensign.

A spokesman said: "Today we are flying the Red Ensign on Community Square to mark Merchant Navy Day, honouring the men and women who kept our island nation afloat during both World Wars, and modern day merchant seafarers who are responsible for over 90% of the UK’s imports."
