A WOMAN had to be cut free from the mangled wreckage of her car after a collision on the London-bound carriageway of the A2 at Gravesend on Thursday evening.

It is believed a lorry and a car collided near the slip road at 4.20pm. Her son, who was also travelling in the car, managed to pull himself free from the vehicle.

Traffic was brought to a standstill. The car was left virtually unidentifiable.

After firefighters freed the woman by cutting off the roof of the car, she was air-lifted to Gillingham's Medway Maritime Hospital. Her injuries and condition are as yet unknown.

The Kent Air Ambulance had landed on the A2 about 100m from the Tollgate Hotel. A man suffering leg injuries was also taken by ambulance to hospital.

The road was closed from the hotel to the Pepperhill exit for several hours until police were eventually able to open one lane of the carriageway. This remained in place until the early hours of this morning while an investigation into the cause of the incident took place.
