Construction starts on 532 new homes on site of former Northfleet cement works as part of Ebbsfleet Garden City plans

Work to turn a former Northfleet cement works site into hundreds of new homes is under way.

A total of 532 new homes will be built off The Creek on a brownfield site as part of the mass regeneration and housing project being delivered at Ebbsfleet Garden City.

The former cement works site closed in 2008 and will now be paved over to make way for the Harbour Village development on the south bank of the Thames.

There will be 372 properties made available for private sale and 160 affordable homes for rent or shared ownership opportunities.

As part of the wider transformation of the former cement works site, approximately 46,000 square metres of retail, commercial and office space will be constructed.

The project is being delivered by housebuilder Bellway which says it will also deliver a new community centre, open spaces, parks and a riverside promenade running along the Thames.

John Haggerstone, construction director at Bellway Thames Gateway, said: “Harbour Village represents a key element of the ongoing Ebbsfleet Garden City development, which will eventually deliver around 15,000 new homes along the Thames Gateway.

“This development will transform a derelict former industrial site into a thriving new residential and commercial neighbourhood, connecting the existing settlement of Northfleet to the river.

“Harbour Village is situated in an important commuter location. It’s just a 10-minute walk from Northfleet railway station, which has direct services to central London in an hour, and a 15-minute walk from Ebbsfleet International Station for high-speed services into London taking less than 20 minutes."

A mix of one and two-bed apartments and two to four-bed houses are to be made available, designed to meet the needs of first-time buyers, young professionals working in the city, and local families.

The first homes at Harbour Village at Ebbsfleet Garden City are due to go on sale in 2023.
