Ebbsfleet United 2 Hastings United 2 (Ebbsfleet won 4-1 on penalties) FA Cup match report

Ebbsfleet progressed to the Third Qualifying Round of the FA Cup after a penalty shoot-out win over lower league Hastings.

Isthmian South East Hastings were seconds away from going through as Fleet equalised in stoppage time during new manager Dennis Kutrieb's first game in charge.

The game went to extra-time after a stunning 20-yard volley from Fleet midfielder Ben Chapman two minutes into stoppage time.

Only one Ebbsfleet player remained in the starting line-up from their last competitive outing - Josh Payne also featured in that 1-0 win at Halifax 203 days ago.

New boss Kutrieb opted for a 3-5-2 formation with the emphasis on passing the ball out from the back.

Former Gills youngster Tom Hadler got the nod in goal ahead of Jordan Holmes but he was nearly left red-faced inside the first eight minutes.

Halder's pass out sold defender Jake Goodman short and Tom Chalmers nipped in. He beat Hadler at this near post but the ball was hacked off the line just as he looked to have put Hastings ahead.

Three minutes later, Hastings felt the Fleet should have been reduced to 10 men when Payne went sliding in on John Elliott but referee Tom Danaher opted for yellow when it could have easily been red.

Fleet were caught out three times trying to bring the ball out of defence in the first 20 minutes - but they nearly caught Hastings trying to do the same thing.

Captain Lee Martin stole the ball on the edge of the Hastings box but Louis Rogers got the ball with his outstretched arm as the Fleet man tried to round the keeper.

Hastings continued to press the hosts as they maintained their passing game, albeit too many balls failed to find their intended target too often for Kutrieb's liking.

Elliott's cross to the far post was headed down by Kenny Pogue but the ball hit the turf and bounced back over the bar as Fleet's goal survived.

James Dobson became the third Ebbsfleet manager to enter the referee's notepad in the first half as the hosts became increasingly frustrated and they certainly left their mark on their opponents.

Fleet made a double change at the start of the second half, Jack Paxman and Rakish Bingham coming on. And it nearly had the desired effect.

A flowing move eight minutes after the break saw Martin pull the ball back from the byline and Paxman's first-time shot rattled against the upright before being cleared.

Fleet went ahead on 58 minutes. Former Ebbsfleet defender Craig Stone was penalised for handball following Adebayo-Rowling's cross and Martin stepped up to send Rogers the wrong way from the spot.

But Hastings levelled within two minutes when the ball fell perfectly for Kenny Rogue, whose low shot went under the body of Hadler.

That took the flow out of Ebbsfleet's improved performance although the hosts nearly regained the lead when Bingham turned the ball wide at the near post from Adam Mekki's low right-wing cross.

Hastings had a glorious chance to go ahead with 15 minutes left when Ben Pope played fellow substitute Marcus Goldsmith in behind. But Hadler redeemed himself with a smart stop and the follow-up was also blocked by the Fleet defence.

The impressive Sam Adams went close twice from distance for Hastings within a minute. His first effort was beaten behind by Hadler before his second attempt curled just wide of the upright.

Chalmers should have scored for the visitors with seven minutes left when Hastings broke with speed but his right-foot shot went just wide after neat footwork.

At the other end, Martin created room for himself to get a shot away but it was blocked and proved comfortable for Rogers in the end.

But Hastings looked the more likely and so it proved with four minutes left. A lovely pass behind the defence saw Elliott cross low into the six-yard box and Adams took his time to convert at the far post - but that was until Chapman intervened.
